The National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR) successfully conducted a transformative two-day in-house masterclass titled "Unlock the Power of Research with NISIR", focused on Grant Proposal Development and Publication Writing. The workshop, held from 7th to 8th April 2025 at the Lusaka Legacy Resort & Conference Centre, was designed to strengthen the research capacity of NISIR scientists and researchers, equipping them with practical skills to develop competitive grant proposals and publish high-quality research.

Introduction & Strategic Importance

This in-house training provided participants with practical tools to navigate the complex landscape of research funding and scholarly publishing. Aligning with NISIR's mandate to promote scientific innovation, research excellence, and knowledge dissemination, the masterclass marked a significant investment in human capital development. In an era where research competitiveness depends on both securing funding and communicating findings effectively, this initiative positions NISIR researchers for greater impact.

Masterclass Objectives

  • Enhance the grant proposal writing skills of NISIR scientists and researchers.
  • Equip participants with strategies for publishing research findings in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Familiarize participants with the entire research funding and publication process, including donor expectations and peer-review procedures.
  • Promote research excellence, visibility, and impact among NISIR staff.
  • Foster collaboration and networking among researchers within NISIR.

Workshop Content & Sessions

Grant Proposal Writing – Prof. Sody Munsaka

The workshop began with an intensive session on grant proposal writing, led by Prof. Sody Munsaka. Participants learned how to identify and align research projects with funding opportunities, develop clear problem statements, and define SMART research objectives. The session also covered structuring methodologies, preparing and justifying budgets, understanding common reasons for proposal rejection, and tailoring proposals to specific donors (e.g., Wellcome Trust, EU Horizon, IDRC, and national research councils). Practical exercises allowed participants to simulate real-world proposal development, reinforcing theoretical concepts. By the end of the session, participants gained confidence and hands-on skills to develop competitive and fundable research proposals.

Research Publication Writing – Dr. Masauso Moses Phiri & Dr. Owen Ngalamika

Drs. Masauso Moses Phiri and Owen Ngalamika facilitated a dynamic session on transforming research outputs into publishable manuscripts. Participants learned how to structure scientific papers, including effective introductions (funneling from broad to specific), clear methods sections, results with appropriate statistical presentation, and discussions that interpret findings in context. The session emphasized selecting appropriate journals, understanding impact factors, open access options, and predatory publishing red flags. Practical guidance was provided on writing abstracts, conclusions, managing ethical considerations (plagiarism, authorship, conflicts of interest), and navigating the submission and peer-review process. Participants also explored strategies for responding to reviewer feedback and revising manuscripts effectively. Overall, the session equipped researchers with hands-on skills and insights to enhance the quality and impact of their publications.

Career Talk & Motivation Session – Dr. Masauso Moses Phiri

Dr. Masauso Moses Phiri delivered an inspiring session aimed at empowering NISIR researchers to build sustainable, impactful careers. He emphasized strategies for building a successful research career, maintaining productivity and motivation despite administrative demands, balancing research with institutional duties, and the importance of networking, mentorship, and continuous professional development. Participants found the session highly motivating, gaining practical advice and encouragement to advance their careers and produce research that addresses national development priorities.

Methodology & Interactive Approach

The workshop adopted a highly interactive, hands-on methodology, including facilitator-led presentations with real-life examples from successful grants and publications, individual and group writing exercises, peer-to-peer discussions and collaborative learning, and extensive question-and-answer sessions with facilitators. This approach ensured that theoretical concepts were immediately applied, reinforcing learning outcomes.

"The masterclass was eye-opening. I now understand how to frame a research question for both funders and journal editors. The practical exercises on budgeting and responding to peer review were invaluable. I feel ready to submit my first international grant proposal."
— Dr. Clara Mwansa, Senior Research Scientist, NISIR

Participation & Engagement

The workshop was attended exclusively by NISIR scientists, researchers, and graduate trainees, ensuring an in-house, focused training environment. Engagement was exceptionally high, with participants actively asking questions, sharing experiences from their own research, practicing proposal and manuscript writing exercises, and forming peer-review groups for ongoing support. The cross-departmental attendance (from Food Science, Animal Science, Nuclear Science, Water Energy & Environment, and Digital Transformation directorates) fostered rich interdisciplinary dialogue.

Way Forward & Expected Outcomes

Following the masterclass, NISIR plans to establish a Grant Writing Support Unit and a Manuscript Mentorship Program to provide ongoing assistance. Facilitators will offer follow-up virtual consultations for participants developing specific proposals. The Institute also intends to organize annual writing retreats and establish an internal pre-submission peer-review system. Expected outcomes include increased grant submission success rates, higher publication output in peer-reviewed journals, enhanced research visibility for NISIR, and stronger collaborations with international funding partners.

NISIR extends sincere gratitude to Prof. Sody Munsaka, Dr. Masauso Moses Phiri, and Dr. Owen Ngalamika for their exceptional facilitation, and to all participants for their enthusiastic engagement. This masterclass reaffirms NISIR's commitment to building a world-class research culture in Zambia.
