Our Technical Projects

Materials engineering solutions from lab to industry

Biogas Purification Membrane from Agricultural Waste

Rationale: Using cellulose from corn stalks & activated carbon from maize cobs to engineer a cost-effective, scalable membrane that removes H₂S, CO₂, and moisture from biogas — upgrading quality for heating, electricity, and transport.

Circular materials High TRL Low-carbon engineering

🎯 Engineering Objectives:

  • Design & fabricate novel membrane using local agro-residues.
  • Optimize porosity, pore size distribution & mechanical strength.
  • Evaluate removal efficiency for H₂S, CO₂, moisture.
  • Life-cycle assessment + techno-economic analysis.

SDG alignment: SDG 7, 9, 12, 13

Mobile Biofuel Unit 🇿🇲 Patent Submitted

Rationale: Rising fuel costs and finite fossil reserves demand decentralized biofuel production. This mobile unit converts starchy biomass into fuel-grade bioethanol and bio-gel using modular materials engineering.

Socio-economic impact: youth artisanal skills, women out-grower schemes, green manufacturing jobs.
  • Produce fuel-grade bioethanol & bio-gel from local feedstocks.
  • Build technical capacity for young engineers.
  • Empower women through out-grower model.

METS Mobile Biofuel Reactor prototype — pilot demonstration

Plaster of Paris (POP) & Interlocking Pavers

Locally manufactured POP for health & education sectors (dental molds, chalk, orthopedic casts) and interlocking pavers for roads — creating jobs & revitalizing NISIR brickyard.

Objectives: produce quality POP/pavers, transfer skills to youth, supply affordable materials to schools/clinics.

Ceramics & Scientific Glassblowing Hub

Scientific glassblowing workshop (est. 1975) fabricates laboratory apparatus. Ceramics section produces flower pots, mugs, tandoori ovens, technical insulators, and refractory materials.

⚙️ Technical consultancy & materials support for innovators across Zambia.

"The METS Centre brickyard & workshops offer a conducive environment for innovators to thrive — leading to spin-offs and startup companies."

Specialised Technical Facilities

Scientific Glassblowing Workshop

Established 1975 — fabrication, repair & modification of non-graduated lab glass: test tubes, Liebig condensers, spirit lamps, beakers, custom distillation apparatus. Supplying research institutes, universities & schools across Zambia.

Ceramics & Refractory Section

Creative & technical ceramics: flower pots, mugs, tandoori ovens, porcelain insulators, plus Plaster of Paris (POP) and interlocking pavers. On-demand custom ceramic products available for industry.

⚙️ Materials consultancy & technical support for innovators in material science, kiln design, and clay processing.

Materials Characterization Lab

Testing of mechanical strength, porosity, chemical compatibility, and thermal properties for new materials — supporting local R&D and quality assurance.
