The major objective of the Unit is to contribute to achieving a clear understanding of the dynamic characteristics of the country’s water resources on the basis of which realistic policies and strategies for the development of the country’s water resources can be formulated.

Our Mission is to provide effective research results in the area of water resources so as to contribute to the knowledge about water distribution, quantity and quality as well as ensure its rational development, conservation and maintain a good quality environment; develop appropriate water conservation and water quality technologies.

Goals

  • To develop quantity and quality inventory of surface and groundwater resources.

  • To develop appropriate and affordable water treatment technologies.

  • To provide analytical and consultancy services to the water and sanitation sector.

The Unit has been conducting research and development with emphasis on environmental and inventory issues.

(a)    The inventory of the water resources is being carried out adopting a basin wise approach. Luangwa, Chambeshi, Kafue, Zambezi, Luapula and Lake Tanganyika are the major river basins of Zambia.

(b)    The Luano Catchments are research facilities for characterizing the hydrologic regime of headwaters of Zambian river basins, which are typified by high rainfall conditions and are vegetated with Miombo trees and Dambo grasses.

(c)    On the environmental issues, three aspects of low-cost technologies for water treatment.

i.      The use of a ceramic candle housed in a ferrocenaent tanks.

ii.     Moringa oleifera trees are being grown that will produce seeds that could be used as a coagulant in water treatment.

iii.  The use of Solar Water   Pasteurization to decontaminate water of faecal indicator bacteria by heating it to temperatures above 6oc.
