The Vibrational origin of the
Roman doublet in p-cresol in the spectral region 860-820 cm-1, by R.C.

Polarization and intensity measurements on p-cresol, its deuterated derivatives
and on other p-substituted benzenes show that the Raman doublet in the spectral
region 860-920 cm-1 is a Fermi doublet. It arises from the coupling between the
totally symmetric ring breathing mode v1 [A1] and the overtone of the non-planar
ring mode v16a [A2] whose upper state has A1 symmetry.
