| The
Goal of the Programme is to provide quality and effective R&D support to the
livestock sub-sector of the agricultural industry in order to improve
productivity and quality of livestock. Some of the projects include those
dealing with: |

Scientific personnel assessing animal for presence of disease vectors |
- Improvement of the nutrition status of livestock through increased use of
locally produced feed resources;

- Elucidate
the epidemiology of livestock diseases including vector-borne diseases
|

- Elucidate the biology and ecology of vectors of livestock diseases and
development of appropriate pest management technologies;
|
| |
|
- Develop environmentally-friendly biopesticides including those from
plants;
- Evolve/develop techniques for shortening reproductive cycles and extending
reproductive life span of local breeds;
- Overcome infertility and improve breeds through artificial insemination,
embryo transfer etc;
- Map out the prevalence, spread, nature of diseases and disease-carrying
pests;
- Develop vaccines and drugs, especially preventive drugs from local plants;
- Develop environmentally friendly procedures for dip-management, quick
diptesting for field work and assess those suitable for accelerated natural
degradation of pesticides in dip-wastes;
- Develop methods of forecasting peak occurrences of ticks;
Improve nutrition quality of stock-feed through better formulations with
respect to energy, protein, micronutrients and introduce local forages and
food stuffs;
- Introduce new and improve the existing techniques of quality assurance and
decontamination of stock-feed.
