Nuclear Energy Application and Analytical Services

Location: Headquarters, Lusaka

The mandate is to undertake research and development activities through peaceful applications of nuclear energy and other analytical techniques for sustainable socio-economic development

The programme is implementing the following projects:

Assessment of Uranium in drinking water in Kitwe and Chingola townships

The overall aim of the project is to provide information on the levels of uranium isotopes in drinking water supplied by Mulonga and Nkana Water and Sewerage Companies on the Copperbelt Province.

The activities being undertaken will identify water sources with high levels of Uranium isotopes and quantitatively measure uranium isotopes and determine potential health risks,

Further, the project will propose possible intervention measures to reduce uranium content in this water being supplied commercially.

Production of bio-fertilisers from human solid waste

The overall objective of the project is to produce bio-fertilizer from human solid wastes using ionizing radiation.

The project activities involves characterization of raw sewage sludge for plant micro nutrients, organics and pathogens; establishing gamma sterilization dose for raw sewage sludge; determining effects of ionizing radiation on micro-nutrients; and production of composite bio-fertilizer.
