The programme mandate is to contribute to the sustainable development of the country through prudent use and application of biotechnology.

This is a new programme and its laboratory was officially opened on 27th April, 2010.

The programme has completed one baseline study and is implementing another on processed foods:

- Baseline study for the presence of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Zambia

The overall objective is to generate information on the presence of genetically modified organisms in Zambia.

The activities have focused on testing Maize and soybean samples that have been collected from border areas between Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia.

The gathering of this baseline data will assist in determining the extent of GMOs presence in Zambia.

Baseline study for the presence of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in processed food products in Zambia.

The overall objective is to determine the prevalence of genetically modified maize and soybean ingredients in different processed foods on the Zambian market and compliance with the Biosafety Act.
