Characterization of red-burning
clays of Zambia, by J.P. Guha, Zambia Journal of Science and
Technology, Vol.2, no.3, July 1977, Pg. 11-19.
Red-burning clay samples from two local deposits, namely, Nega-Nega and
Kalulushi were beneficiated and the relevant physical properties of the purified
clays determined. Both the clays possess several properties favourable for the
production of common bricks, hollow blocks and flooring tiles. The only major
disadvantage is a high water-absorption value for both the clays at the maximum
permissible firing temperature which warrants partial substitution of the parent
clays by another low firing clay or a suitable fluxing agent to promote
vitrification at a lower firing temperature.
