Water Utilization Behaviour of Maize as Influenced by Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorous (P) on an Oxic Paleustult, by V.R.N. Chinene, Zambia Journal of Science and Technology, Vol.8, no.1, September 1989, Pg.20-26

A study was made of the effect of N and P on extractable soil water by maize on an Oxic Paleustult. Extractable Soil water increase with increase in the levels of N and P. However, stepwise regression analysis showed that the observed response was mostly due to N rather than P. The effect of N was one of increasing the surface leaf area. This in turn increased the evapotranspiration demand of the crop as reflected by the increase in extractable water.
