The National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research, is a government institution set up by the Science and Technology Act No. 26 of 1997 through the Statutory Instrument No. 73 of 1998 after the repeal of the National Council for Scientific Research Act Cap 236 of the Laws of Zambia. NISIR is funded by the government of Zambia. However, multilateral and bilateral cooperating partners fund specific projects of mutual interest.
The functions of the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research as stipulated in the Science and Technology Act of 1997 Section 4 and Statutory Instrument No. 73, are:-
The institute is located on three Centers; the headquarters situated along the Lusaka International Airport Road, the Animal Science Research Centre located in Chilanga and the Tree Improvement Research Centre in Kitwe.
